NEW TOWN ROAD HOUSE. This phased project for Caleb and his family was built with energy efficiency and long-term economy in mind. This 1250 s.f. structure was designed to easily convert from a small living space for the family into a garage and second floor guest house in the future. The two large glass sliding doors were sized to be easily replaced with standard garage doors. The project proved to be a study in reducing a house to its bare essentials.
With Caleb’s family as the client, we discovered the design challenges involved with having a truly blank slate. Constraints that guided the design included a limited Phase 1 budget and a desire to use primarily local resources. As a result many materials- from cabinet knobs to refinished antique doors—were designed, built or bought, locally.
Due to our firm’s love of naturally weathering raw materials, we built a rain screen cladding system out of eastern white cedar which requires little to no maintenance. In addition, all of the interior beams and concrete floors were left beautifully exposed and the steel connections were left unfinished. We paid close attention to situate the home low to the ground. This allowed for a successful transition from inside to outside which provides a second living space for Caleb’s family.
