CAMP ELLIS. These clients turned to us when the site’s original cottage, having been in the family for almost 100 years, was destroyed in a storm. We were asked to step in to help them rebuild on this ocean-front site in Saco, Maine. Due to the new strict standards and local regulations for building on a sand dune, we encountered significant challenges while designing and rebuilding on this site. Once complete, the added effort put into this project proved worth while.

Visiting family and friends quickly discovered that the design promotes the cottage’s original and simple aspiration for outdoor living. It was designed around four porches which make up one third of the floor plan. A cross form was settled upon to maximize views from each room and create natural spots for gathering spaces within the porches. To give the cottage a natural feel, weathering cedar was chosen for the exterior and knotty pine for the interior. This beach house rebuild provided a huge improvement to the outdoor lifestyle the family requested for their summer home.
