265 MAIN STREET

In 2010 Caleb Johnson and local businessman David Flood partnered to form Thread—an organization dedicated to bringing economic growth to Main Street through real estate development. After a year and a half of preparation, our firm began renovations to transform the abandoned brick building at 265 into artists' studios, live/work lofts, retail space, and CJA’s new architecture studio. Our collaboration with the arts group Engine has opened possibilities to integrate music studios and an art gallery.

2 MILE STRETCH ROAD

Located on a prominent beach front lot in Biddeford Pool, this house has views of Biddeford Pool’s Harbor to the west as well as the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Various decks and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the house take full advantage of these views. The adjacent ocean-side neighborhood is primarily of beach houses with strong New England style homes and cottages. The design provided an appropriate balance between the typical modern glass home with contemporary floor plan, and the traditional aesthetic of the homes that currently surround it.

SACO CHURCH

A local contractor came to us with the challenge of converting an old church in Camp Ellis into 2 dwellings units. We were struck by the exposed iron riveted trusses which opened up large spans and high ceilings. With the client's blessing, the project soon centered around preserving these trusses as well as the high ceilings. By creating a second story bridge to cross the central lofted space, we were able to make a dramatic home where all spaces open onto the central living area framed by the antique trusses.

FLORENCE LOMBARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Caleb's involvement on the board of this private school led CJA to work alongside Green Design Studio on this project. Working with them we developed a bright and fresh school addition filled with modern classroom amenities. It was designed to be as maintenance-free as possible. Its new entry and floor plan reorganization bring clarity to this building made up of a church, day care, and private school. The renovation is currently being built by CJA Construction.

FAIRWAY DRIVE

Our firm was chosen to design and build a renovation for a family’s summer home in Kennebunk. The new floors, paint, some windows and doors, and new lighting, fixtures, and built-ins, went a long way in contemporizing the house. On the exterior, some cedar shake siding was replaced and a new entry porch was constructed. It is both the detail in the wooden porch and the interior millwork that make this project something special.
